(a)  General - (i) These regulations cover both hot finished and cold drawn seamless carbon steel pipes for high temperature service.  The pipes shall conform in all respects with the requirements herein specified.

(ii)  The seamless pipes conforming to other national/international standards which are known to be commonly used as being suitable for high temperature service can also be used with the designations of the national/international standards, provided such materials are not specifically prohibited by the regulations.

(iii)   While making pipes to other national/internationals standards the allowable stresses of the respective nation/international standards shall be strictly followed while designing the tubes.

(b)   Material. - (i)  The pipes shall be seamless and manufactured from steel produced by an open hearth or electric process or any of the oxygen processes.  The steel shall be fully killed.

  • CS pipe: generic term for pipes made from carbon steel (various grades, e.g., ASTM A106, A53, API 5L). Used across many industries for conveying fluids, structure, piping systems.

  • CS pipe: suitability depends on chosen grade and applicable code (ASME, API, EN); not inherently boiler-grade.
  • IBR pipe: selected and certified to withstand boiler/pressure-service conditions as required under IBR.
• Practical consequences for procurement and installation
  • For non-pressure or low-risk applications, standard CS pipe per ASTM/EN is acceptable and often cheaper.
  • For boilers, steam lines, feedwater and other pressure-retaining components in jurisdictions enforcing IBR, only IBR-certified pipe is acceptable; using generic CS without IBR certification can fail inspections and be illegal.

Pipes of ASTM A335 P11 may be either cold drawn or hot rolled. Each pipe shall be reheated for heat treatment – full or isothermal annealing, normalizing and tempering at a temperature no less than 1200°F(650°C).

Hydrostatic test shall be performed on each pipe length of ASTM A335 P11 along with dimensional inspection and visual examination. Longitudinal or transverse tension test, flattening test, or bend test shall be performed for each heat number of furnace. When specified by the purchaser, one of the alternative nondestructive tests can be performed: ultrasonic test, eddy current test, or flux leakage examination. Hardness test is not necessary.
