Monel grade elbows are specialized fittings made from Monel alloys, primarily composed of nickel and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. Monel alloys, such as Monel 400 and Monel K-500, are prized for their outstanding resistance to corrosion, especially in seawater and other harsh media. Titanium Grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 are commercially pure (99% minimum titanium). Each grade has slight variations in chemical composition that affect mechanical properties and design capability. The corrosion resistance is similar across all four grades. Titanium is light weight, exceptionally corrosion resistant and often exceeds the corrosion resistance of stainless steels in most environments. Of the four commercially pure (C.P.) titanium grades, Grade 2 is the alloy of choice for most industrial applications that require good ductility and corrosion resistance.

Titanium Grade 2 has a lower density making it very desirable where weight can be a concern. Medical and aerospace are two key industries for titanium alloys. The strength and corrosion resistance properties of titanium Grade 2 also make it well suited to applications in the marine, chemical processing and desalination industries. Typical applications for Grade 2 titanium include oil & gas components, reaction and pressure vessels, tubing or piping systems, heat exchangers, liners, flue-gas desulphurization systems and many other industrial components. Continuous service temperatures can reach up to 800°F with occasional, intermittent service at 1000°F.

Titanium’s C.P. grades corrosion resistance comes from a strongly adherent, stable, protective oxide film, which forms in the presence of oxygen. This film makes the commercially pure titanium grades resistant to most oxidizing, neutral and inhibited reducing, as well as mildly reducing environments. Grade 2 offers excellent resistance to seawater and marine atmospheric corrosion. Corrosion resistance is similar between the four C.P. grades, but mechanical properties vary along with varying oxygen and iron contents. Grade 2 titanium is resistant to attack from moist chlorides and metallic chlorides, chlorite and hypochlorite solutions, nitric and chromic acids, organic acids as well as many gaseous industrial applications.

Titanium Grade 2 has good ductility, which allows for cold formability. To prevent cold forming concerns, the minimum bend radius for material under 0.070″ thick should be 2T, while 2.5T should be used for material over 0.070″. The material can also be easily machined, hot worked and welded. Hot working should be performed between 400°F and 600°F. Stress relieving should be performed by heating to a temperature between 900°F and 1100°F followed by either forced air or slow cooling. Annealing temperatures range from 1200°F to 1400°F for 6 minutes to 2 hours followed by an air cool.
Welding of Grade 2 titanium can be performed using various methods such as MIG and TIG. Inert gas shielding is crucial to prevent oxygen pickup and embrittlement of the weld area. A mixture of argon and helium is typically preferred but should be tested prior to accepting a welding procedure. Preheat or post heat treatments are not required.

Grades 1.4401 and 1.4404, commonly known as stainless steel grades 316 and 316L, are the second most commonly used stainless steel grade after 304/304L. 316 is basically an improved version of 304, with addition of molybdenum and slightly higher content of nickel.

However, both 304 and 316 grades have significant commercial usage due to their good corrosion resistant properties, crevice corrosion and cost effectiveness. Stainless steel 316 contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride environments.

316L, the low carbon version of Stainless steel 316, while Type 316H is a higher carbon variant of 316 mainly suitable for elevated temperature applications. 316Ti is a titanium stabilized version of 316. Resistance to sensitization is achieved in type 316Ti with titanium additions to stabilize the structure against chromium carbide precipitation, which is the source of sensitization.

Given the good forming and welding characteristics, 316L grade stainless steel pipes and tubes are widely used in marine, petrochemical, power generation and external architectural applications.

A solid solution alloy, Monel 400 is an alloy that exhibits superior resistance to the marine environment. This is an alloy which can only be strengthened by cold working. Cold worked Alloy 400 Pipe produced under specification ASTM B165, is available in both a seamless or welded construction. Nickel based ASME SB 165 UNS N04400 exhibits a lower rate of corrosion in rapidly flowing brackish/saline water or seawater as well as steam at elevated temperatures. In the presence of caustic solutions, the resilience of a Monel Pipe is amazing. Furthermore, the display of excellent corrosion resistance properties makes this alloy grade well suited for applications in several freshwater sources. Hence, Monel 400 Pipe is used in chemical processing and marine environments.

The corrosion resistance to acids such as hydrochloric acid or hydrofluoric acid in a deaerated condition, of the Monel 400 Seamless Pipe is what makes them suitable for use in non-oxidizing chloride based solutions. In an annealed condition, the strength of a Monel 400 EFW Pipe is relatively low. This can be remedied by the use of various tempers, which can result in an increase in strength. The Monel 400 Welded Pipe can be used at temperatures as high as about 1000° F down to cryogenic temperatures. Apart from having good resistance to alkalis, the  ASTM B725 UNS N04400 demonstrates excellent resistance when exposed to solutions containing neutral and alkaline salts.To obtain superior mechanical properties in  DIN 2.4360 material it is advisable to combine and have proper control over hot working and cold working, along with thermal and heat treatment. Methods used to weld Monel Thin Wall Pipe include gas arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and metal arc welding. It also includes the use of proper filler metals. However, post weld heat treatment is not necessary. However, it is important to thoroughly clean the ASME SB165 UNS N04400 Pipe post welding.
